i highly doubt Horizon will be fully supportive of PS4's checkerboard UHD. it will have the graphical bling bling but at a sacrifice of its native checkerboard UHD res.

Horizon will do full phat 4K (2160p) via checker boarding, not CB to lower resolution like 1800p ala Watch Dogs 2. It will also support super sampling for 1080p TVs unlike The Last Guardian.

4K Checker-smhecker...native 1080p res (or super sampling) ftw, all day everyday. Just hope the frame rate is stable on base PS4.

^ CB is unfortunately not a universal solutions, some games do it good, some don't. When it works well, even folks like Digital Foundry can't tell a difference between CB and native 4K when sitting 5 ft from UHD TV's. They've stated multiple times how it's a really impressive technology.

I've seen the method in action on PC in several games and its a matter of playing a native game after that before you realize how bad it looks. Quantum Break was way too demanding and the only thing that made their checker boarding aka pixel reconstruction worth it was the 60FPS trade off. Same case with Rainbox Six Siege.

I only go to DF for their fact finding analysis (resolution, frame rate, frame pacing etc), hardly ever end up agreeing with their personal opinions. NXGamer and AngryCentaurGaming come off as far more technically well-versed than DF.

I have NXGamer subscribed on youtube too, the guy has been posting some very good Pro impressions since release too. Every time someone makes a topic of his videos on GAF, he comes in and thanks them personally, very humble guy. If you've got a 1080p display, then I guess native would make more sense but on a 4K TV it's always preferred to have a higher resolution, 1080p only, unless accompanied by some really good AA, has unwelcome jaggies.

Uncharted 4 is a good example, the game runs at 1440p, much lower than a lot of other Pro enhanced games but still has some of the sharpest image quality because of a good TAA implementation. Mafia 3, which also uses TAA and runs at a higher resolution, looks incredibly blurry in comparison. These are both based on my own play impressions. I'm sure online screenshots will corroborate the same.

The lag is dependent on the quality of the display. Some are horrendous, some are marketing gimmicks but it works. It's no substitute for real 60FPS, but it's the next best thing.

Regarding FFXV, any lack of optimization, if there is, doesn't deter the experience. 40 hours in, I haven't encountered any problems. I think it's a fantastic game and an experience that shouldn't be missed out on. It is one of a kind. I really hope they release it on a PC because it's definitely worth experiencing.

Last November I played an exclusive behind closed doors version of Horizon. I think they deliberately got us to play on the cheapest imaginable 1080p display. But the game felt extremely polished and has probably the most amazing visuals of any game I've experienced so far. The frame rate was rock solid.

Then they took us to the next room where they were running it on a Pro hooked up with a curved OLED with HDR. It was drop dead gorgeous and unbelievably sharp. It WAS the most amazing realtime visual I have seen in any game so far.

I would want to upgrade to Pro not for the 4K, but for the HDR (when I have a good enough display).

I've mentioned this before in this thread, OLED + HDR is more game changing than 4K (which is a simple resolution boost) even in theory. Haven't yet tried it myself though. And PS4 and PC can do HDR as well. HDR monitors were announced on CES 2017.

Wait, you're saying you don't need extra oomph for HDR? The PS4 can do HDR in all games (that support it)? :|

OG PS4 also supports HDR, they patched it in via firmware update. I think you still need a 4K TV (aside from the monitors Necro mentioned) as no 1080p TV has HDR to it.

Holy shit y'all, Ratchet and Clank just might be the best looking PS4 game via it's Pro mode. My wife was watching me play it and she asked me if this is a new Pixar movie I'm watching. Game looks *that* good.

Glad I picked this up during black friday.

You don't absolutely need 4K for that. As long as you're playing at native or higher resolution on your display the games will look super sharp and crisp.

If by oomph you mean more powerful hardware in form of Pro or high-end PC, then no, you don't. All you need is an HDR capable display and you can be playing games in HDR that support it on your base PS4 as well. Only downside right now is that manufacturers are tying HDR with 4K displays only. This is where the prospect of 1080p/1440p OLED-HDR monitors looks great to me.
