I want to buy a new monitor / TV specifically for 3D gaming on PC. I know that my current PC will not be able to provide good enough performance for 3D @1080p at max detail level, but that is not what I'm worried about right now. I'll upgrade PC later on.

Right now I'm confused due to lack of availability and price of 3D monitors. I wanted to buy 3D Vision 2 monitor like Asus VG278H but it is not available right now and according to Shingtech they might get it in future but currently they have no plan of bringing it in Pakistan. Only real option of getting a 3D monitor with 3D Vision kit right now is Asus VG236H as far as I know. Is there any other option (please don't say AOC E2352PHZ) available in Pakistan? I have heard that VG236H is an excellent LCD, but after 3D Vision 2 has been launched, is it wise to buy an LCD that is already outdated?

I know the advantages VG278H has over the VG236H. But even if I wait for it, are the differences really worth spending that much more? Currently VG236H is available for $400-450, while VG278H costs around $700. VG236H is available in Pakistan for around 47k. While VG278H will most likely cost around 65-70k.

Another reason for making this thread is to ask existing users of VG236H regarding their experience with this particular LCD and with Nvidia 3D Vision glasses (particularly from users who use prescription glasses). Is it really worth the extra cost? Or would I be better served by either waiting a bit more or by getting a 3DTV instead?

i don't think the 3d of a tv works with a computer... i mean you cannot make 3d tv a 3d monitor or something... that is what i have heard... and i haven't gone for the asus model because it is too small... 23" is tiny seriously... it should be atleast 27" but sadly that model is not available in pakistan and may never will be... if you can make 3d tv a 3d monitor then go for that... bigger the better i would say...

3D TVs work with PCs and can be used as monitors. But due to limitations of HDMI 1.4, they are limited to 720p for 60fps gaming. However, they can be used @1080p for both 3D movies and other 2D work. However, 3D TV of 32" are not readily available in Pakistan. And 40" is a bit too big (and expensive :$) to use as PC monitor.

nopes... 40" is not too big... and you can use them for more than 720p for more than 60 fps gaming... what you must be saying is that you cannot use them for more than 60hz even if they are capable i think... but the 3d would suck at 60hz... with v sync it would lock at 60fps... oh i don't know... i bought a 3d tv samsung 9 series 55" but as i gifted it to my sister... i get to use it like once a month when i visit her and so i never tested it with my computer... although i have a lg 42" lcd which is capable of doing 200hz but is non 3d... and with my computer it locks on 60hz

Size is obviously personal preference. I used 43" TV for a few days with my PC and it was not a pleasant experience for me. I don't want to change my way of using PC, something that would be required with anything over 32" (even 32" would be stretching it a bit).

As far as my statement concerning limitations of HDMI 1.4 is concerned, I was obviously implying 3D gaming. A 1080p 3DTV will display 3D games only at 720p (which is too low for such a big size)

The VG278H boasts a brighter picture and less crosstalk, as compared to the VG236H, which are worthwhile advantages. Unless you're really eager for some 3D gaming on PC, I would recommend that you wait for the former to become available. I would also suggest looking into a 32" 3DTV. While they only run games at 720p/60Hz in 3D, 3DTVs offers some excellent upscaling (far superior to that of the VG236H/VG278H).

In addition, 3DTVs offer more headroom for depth adjustment. I've seen the VG236H in action, and the first thing I noticed was that the monitor produced the same level of depth at a full bar on the 3D Vision control panel setting that I got at less than a half bar on a 3DTV. I believe it has something to do with the way 3D is implemented on both TVs and monitors. 3D monitors, as you know, can output at 120Hz in 2D. They essentially halve refresh rate in order to produce the 3D effect via frame sequential output. Active 3DTVs, on the other hand, pack two unique 720p frames and display them sequentially at 60Hz. The latter technology is actually better, and you can clearly see it from the difference in depth strength.

However, an advantage of getting the monitor is that you'll be able to play games at 120Hz in 2D and at 1080p/60Hz in 3D, which you can't do on the TV.

but the 3d would suck at 60hz
3D is currently not possible at beyond 60Hz, not on a 3DTV nor on a monitor.

although i have a lg 42" lcd which is capable of doing 200hz but is non 3d... and with my computer it locks on 60hz
That 200Hz you speak of is a post-process effect known as frame interpolation. A technique which modern HDTVs utilize to fill gaps between frames with artificial frames in order to make the output look smoother. These TVs do not accept anything greater than a 60Hz input.

Hello brother,
well i recently bought this vg236h.. and honestly saying its a perfect screen... when i just only switched it on for windows.. i was like
coz 120Hz display is simply out of the world.. i mean its super fast super clear.. and people using normal screen just get crazy that what a fucking display it got...

now coming to the 3d... well brother before 3d vision 2 this was the only option available.. practically speaking if u want to enjoy full 3d then u have to either switch off the lights or make the area dark where u are sitting.... bcoz if u are sitting on place where there is full light then u will find 3d experience bit dark...

i havent seen vision 2 but according to the reviews and all.. the only feature that has been added is that 3d experience is very bright....

though when i watch movies i switch of the lights and enjoy the movie... its still great.. :D

if u are planning to get a 3d moniter.. then go for this one asap.... 47k main and 70k main there is very huge difference.. :)

so i will say that go for this one InshaALLAH it will serve u great.. :)

oh i got it... monitors actually do 120hz and the tv are simulating by converting a 60hz signal... damn it... i wanted to do 200 actual hz:( on that tv... damn it... the tv has a response time of 2.4ms but it had an input/output lag which made it shitty... oh whatever... i think i then have to actually buy a 3d monitor for high hz fps 2d gaming:(... 27" solutions are not available and that is a pitty...

Bhai kr di na console gamers wali baat. Why would I even care about up-scaling capability of VG236H or VG278H when I'll be playing games at their full resolution. As good as up-scaling of HDTVs might be, it can most definitely not be as good as native resolution.

The advantage you cited for 120Hz monitors is exactly why I'm leaning towards them. I'll use 3D for about 10% of my time on PC. A 120Hz monitor will provide me an improvement during the rest 90% of my time as well.

And I don't think HDTV can compete with monitors when it comes to response time. Anybody doing competitive online gaming (FPS) with HDTV will be at a disadvantage in my opinion.

Actually, the real reason for not getting a 32" 3D TV is lack of availability :$

Thanks mate for your valuable input. Price difference is one of the factors that's making me think of getting this one instead of waiting for VG278H. With VG236H, I'll be able to play 3D games right now. While if I keep waiting for VG278H, it might never come to Pakistan, or be too expensive to afford.

Response time doesn't really make a big difference. Current LED backlit 3DTVs have a response time of around 5ms, which is more than competent for online gaming.

When it comes to competitive gaming, the real issue is input lag, and PC monitors of today are not free from it.

I specifically said at max detail level. I would prefer to reduce detail level before reducing resolution.

But I won't hesitate in buying a good 32" 3D TV if you can find me one for a good price.

The thing about an HDTV is that you can't then sit just a feet away and treat it like an LCD then for PC gaming, it would only hurt your eyes and you wont be able to even view well from that distance. So that wont be a good move.

KDL32EX720 My friend has this model, hooked up with a ps3. the reception is satisfactory.
For 3D gaming on PS3, it's great. For 3D gaming on PC, I'm not too sure. But the main issue is it's hardly available anywhere. And the cost is a bit on the higher side if you ask me (90k).

i beg to differ... i sat away just a meter away from my 42" lg hdtv and i could easily play cs1.6... no viewing issues or eye strains... but the input lag was apparant and fps gaming is no good with that...

Why the hell would someone sit just three feet away from a 42" LCD TV is what I'm more interested in.

Eye straining issues would definitely be there, I'm not sure what's with your case.

That's true and the reason why LED monitor's are that expensive and are much better in viewing. HDTV's can never even come close to the contrast ratio of what LCD's for PC's can preview. There's better color density, better color resolution, etc.

I'm afraid you guys have got it wrong. PC monitors (including LEDs) are mostly (almost all) TN panels. TN panels are good for response time (i.e good for gaming), but can't compete with panels used in good HDTVs (or IPS panels in Apple cinema displays and other high quality PC monitors made for graphical work) in terms of color accuracy, contrast and saturation.
