Couple of years ago, Midway revamped the arcade game (original Area 51) and turned it into a first-person shooter with a great sense of ambience and a much darker mood to it. Now again Guys at Midway Studios Austin, are working on a next installment to the original game which is a squad based FPS shooter about alien invasions known as Blacksite: Area 51, according to the Midway this is a next-generation game that will redefine the first person shooter (FPS) genre (oh well lets see whether they will meet their claim or not). Blacksite: Area 51 will be powered by Unreal-Engine 3.0 so get ready for some kick-ass realistic visuals as well :)

The demo version for Area 51 starts in a small town of Rachel, which had apparently gotten attacked by some alien invaders. You are leading a squad of two other soldiers as you go through building to building, investigating the town. Eventually you arrive at a gas station that’s been turned on its head and you get attacked by several huge alien creatures as well as armed footsoldiers. (wait..sounds familiar?)

The team command options weren’t really presented much in the demo, but what I could see was pretty easy to grasp. All you’d have to do is press the A button when your targeting reticule lines up on a door or an area of interaction to make them react.

The majority of the game is squad-based, and it’ll be down to the player both to command these sidekicks - in a one-click Brothers in Arms style - and to manage their morale. The team take their lead from you: mess up and they start to pull back, act more conservatively, to the point of hiding and blind-firing from behind cover. Get more ballsy and your team gear-up too, pushing forward into close-quarters melee combat.

With on-rails vehicular combat, destructible scenery, a blizzard of believable physics, and Half-Life 2-style in-game cinematics, Blacksite is looking very promising indeed.

Graphically, the demo presented some great next-gen graphical tricks. The character models looked very impressive and the rain effects and reflective textures were all very great, the most beautiful part of the game is the realistic damage to the in-game objects like everything I found to shoot was damaged by my bullets including cars, gas pumps, walls, and signs and the items that you would expect to explode all do so if you shoot them enough.

While the details are still pretty thin on the ground, it has been revealed that the main character will be a Delta Force soldier named Aeran Pierce, a name which my spellchecker keeps refusing to believe in who is on alien-slaughter duty after the events of the first game see wide-spread havoc across the world.

Furthermore, unlike other smiliar games from FPS genre in Blacksite: Area 51 the player should not expect that a scary monster/alien will be standing & waiting in a dark room for a non-sense attack on you, but actually in BSA-51 it will be you who first seek the monter and then a massive battle will takes place between you, your squad and the freaky aliens ;) Interesting isn’t it?

Anyway, Blacksite: Area 51 looks quite promising, fans of the FPS games like FEAR, Doom etc will like this game. The demo was quite short so I can’t explain all the details about the game you have wait for it as Blacksite: Area 51 will be released on November 5th for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but you can always discuss it in the Pakgamers forums until then.
